It is the sheer simplicity of God’s love that defies our understanding. While this is true, our understanding is marred by a world of sin, a heart of sin, and the wounds we bear. The love of God is not as complex as some have made it and not as simple as we desire. The love of God requires something far more simple and yet far more difficult—acceptance. We must accept the simple truth because it is simply true.
Why does God love us? We could not appreciate the answer if it were given. Our best response is not questioning the love, not debating the causes, not research or investigation, not dissection or examination, but trust and acceptance. For THIS is how God loved the world, this is how God loved you and me; He sent his only Son to die for us, that we might never die.
The eloquence of the answers will never overcome the angst of the questions we ask. The simplicity of the answer will always leave us with doubts. Because at the heart of our question is our desire to belong and to be accepted. None of this is granted through words but through action. We can be told a million times that we are loved but it is in the act, the deeds of love, that certainty finds us.
While we were still sinners God loved us—frail humanity. Even now, even here—God loves us, yes, even us. God loves you and me—and Jesus has the scars to prove it. While we suffer, while we wait, while we doubt, and we wonder we live in the simple understanding, the complex simplicity of faith.
“God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Rom. 5:8).”
We can and do doubt His love when circumstances stand against us. But these are mere whispers against His kindness. These are mere suggestions that He has failed us. These are voices from the darkness that we dare not trust. God loves us and has “demonstrated” His love to us. And as He is the God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow—that love is timeless. Yes, it is for yesterday and is for tomorrow, but it is for today—for now. Even now God loves us. Even now God loves you!
